Visit Almodovar
Almodovar is close to the main road between Lisbon and Faro and about 90 kilometers north of Faro. It is not really a tourist town but is a pleasant place to stop on your journey.
Explore Almodovar
Almodovar has a main square with its main church the 'Chiesa Madre' dominating. Surrounding the square are pretty streets whose buildings are painted the traditional white colour with coloured edges to windows and doors. A style very tradtional to towns in Portugal.
There is a museum in Almodovar, the Museu Severo Portelo which features paintings by Severo Portelo who lived in the town and took inspiration from the region for some of his paintings.
The museum is in one of the oldest buildings in town and was once the Almodovar prison.
Downstairs in the museum is a collection of hand made shoes made by local shoemakers.
The shoe industry was once very important in this area and it is perhaps for this reason that shoes have been used in an interesting and unusual way to decorate a smaller church in the town.
Dozens of pairs of shoes have been painted red and attached to a net and suspended from an upstairs window.
The Igreja da Misericordia, or 'church of mercy' is a pretty chapel and inside has a very ornate altar.
Almodovar has a couple of bars and restaurants and small shops.
Places to Visit Nearby
On the edge of town before entering the village (from Lisbon direction) there is a small church with excellent views over the surrounding countryside.
The journey on the main road between Lisbon and Faro is very attractive with rolling hills dotted with cork trees but if you leave the main road at Almodovar and take the N2 to continue on to Faro the countryside on this stretch of road is simply stunning.
The hills become much bigger and the road passes through the Parque de Merendas. A drive we thoroughly recommend.
Faro is the capital of the Algarve region and is a pretty town which has retained its Portuguese flavour unlike some on the Algarve.
You can find more local travel ideas in and the Alentejo guide.
